“No creo que los aeropuertos sean zonas de paso. Para mí son un punto de partida y un lugar de llegada. Origen y destino. Principio y fin. El principio de una aventura que se presenta llena de sensaciones por descubrir o el final del trayecto, que te invita a recapitular todo lo vivido desde tu partida. Me gusta pensar que este disco es así: un billete de ida para los que todavía no conocen a COOPER y también un álbum de fotos que recopila estos últimos años para los que nos han acompañado”. Así justifica Alex Díez el título de este nuevo álbum, el tercero como COOPER, pero lo cierto es que hay mucho más que un nuevo punto de inflexión en esta nueva entrega: hay una colección de canciones impecable, labrada a golpe de single (así se cultivan los grandes discos de pop), unos singles habituales de las listas de ventas ( “Lemon Pop” estuvo varias semanas en lo más alto de la lista de AFYVE), así como la historia de cinco años en la carrera de uno de los artistas más importantes de las escena estatal. Por no hablar de los cuatro nuevos temas que nos regala el que fuera punta de espada de LOS FLECHAZOS: “Hyde Park” puede que sea el hit más directo e incontestable que ha firmado Alejandro desde que comenzó con COOPER, en el que hasta la estrofa se adhiere con la misma facilidad a nuestro subconsciente (preparados para silbarla cada mañana) como a nuestro tobillo (próximamente en todos los bares); “El sueño” es una maravillosa versión de NACHA POP únicamente editada en single, nada más lanzar aquel irrepetible álbum de debut: un inigualable homenaje a otra de las bandas que ha hecho grande el pop firmado en este país; “La edad de la inocencia”, una nueva referencia cinéfila, muy presentes en este disco (“Un dia de furia”, “Rainman”) y en las últimas portadas (Catherine Denueve protagonizaba las de “Días de cine” y “Guárdame un secreto”), en esta ocasión a la película de Martin Scorsese (una de sus cimas cinematográficas) con Daniel Day-Lewis, Winona Ryder y Michelle Pfeiffer, en la que Alex vuelve a mostrar su inigualable habilidad para los estribillos memorables; y “Lisboa” es una pequeña joya, una extraña algarabía psicodélica llena de belleza y emoción.
La recopilación de un trabajo de muchos años que así, escuchado de un tirón, muestra a unos COOPER que ya saben a clásico: a los BYRDS, a Neil Young, a TEENAGE FANCLUB, a THE HOLLIES, a THE KINKS, y sobre todo, con ese poso que solo saben cultivar los grandes cocineros, sabe a Alejandro Díez. “I don’t think airports are transient places. For me, they are a starting point and a final destination. Origin and destination. Start and finish. The beginning of an adventure, that seems full of feelings and experiences to still to discover, or the end of the road, that asks you to go over everything you’ve experienced since you started out. I like to think that this album is like that: a one-way ticket for those who don’t already know COOPER and also a photo album to look back over these last years for those who have traveled with us”. This is how Alex Díez explains the title of the new album, third as COOPER, but really there’s a lot more to it than just a new point of inflection: this is an impeccable collection of songs, carved out of singles (how the great pop albums are made), singles that habitually topped the sales lists (“Lemon Pop” was at the top of the AFYVE lists), as well as the story of five years in the career of one of the most important artists on the Spanish scene. Which is to say nothing about the four new songs that the man who was the spotlight of LOS FLECHAZOS gives us here: “Hyde Park” might be the most direct and uncontestable hit that Alejandro has written since COOPER began, with a chorus that gets just as easily into our subconscious (get ready to wake up whistling it every morning) as it does into our hips (soon to be played in all the bars); “El Sueño” is a marvelous version of NACHA POP only released as a single, just after releasing that unrepeatable debut alum – an incomparable homage to another of the bands that made pop great in this country; “La Edad de La Inocencia”, a new cinephile reference - very present on this disc (“Un Dia de Furia”, “Rainman”) and on the last album covers (Catherine Denueve was on the cover of “Dias de Cine” and “Guárdame Un Secreto”) – in this case to the Martin Scorsese movie (one of their favorite film-makers) with Daniel Day-Lewis, Winona Ryder and Michelle Pfeiffer, on which Alex shows us his unbeatable ability to write memorable choruses; and “Lisboa” is a gem, a strange explosion of psychedelic happiness full of beauty and emotion.
The compilation took many years to make and listening to it all at once shows a COOPER that already tastes like a classic: like the BYRDS, like Neil Young, like TEENAGE FANCLUB, like THE HOLLIES, like THE KINKS, and above all, with that sediment that only the greatest cooks can cultivate, it tastes like Alejandro Díez.
